Several rifles ended up rebuilt, Specifically Vietnam era rifles.  Ordinarily the barrels had been replaced.  Some examples of markings located on replacment barrels contain:    The "C" to the barrel would indicate a chrome chamber only barrel. But AFAIK, Colt marked the "C" up close to the muzzle on their early barrels, not under the handguard
